Hi There!!

I’m sure we’ve all heard of the importance of using sunscreen. Today, I’ll go over the four main reasons why it’s important to use sunscreen. Wear it whether it’s raining or shining, whether you’re indoors or outdoors.

Pigmentation

Wearing sunscreen daily is important as it will prevent pigmentation.  Let's first go over how the sun causes pigmentation.

When the sun hits your skin, it produces heat on your skin.  This stimulates your melanocytes to produce melanin, this is what makes your skin darker or gives you that tan.  Over time the sun will damage your skin if you continuously expose your skin to sunlight without protection.  Some melanocytes will become overactive and produce excess melanin even when there is no exposure to the sun, this leads to pigmentation.

What you want to do is make sure you're protecting your skin against UV rays.  If you already struggle with pigmentation, the sun will only make it worse.

Black and brown skin has bigger melanocytes compared to white skin so we produce more melanin and when our melanocytes become overactive, our skin can even produce melanin in the dermal layer.  This makes us much more prone to pigmentation

Premature ageing

Ageing is a natural part of life and we're all going to age, what we do not want is to age faster than what we're supposed to.  Exposure to the sun without sunscreen can cause premature ageing.

What happens when the heat from the sun hits our skin is the heat causes inflammation on our skin.  This triggers an immune reaction as our skin doesn't know where this heat is coming from, you could be burning for all your skin knows!

White blood cells have to travel to the top of your skin to heal the inflammation but a "path" has to be created through the dense collagen & elastin fibres which make up your skin.  So enzymes are produced to break down collagen & elastin fibres, mainly collagenase & elastinase.  Breaking down collagen & elastin will result in the ageing process starting prematurely.

Healthy Skin

A healthy skin is skin that is plump and can naturally retain moisture, skin that is hydrated and skin that has a barrier that is working properly.

With the sun causing inflammation on our skin, it not only breaks down collagen & elastin, it also breaks down hyaluronic acid.  As part of the immune response, an enzyme called hyalurinase is produced, which breaks down hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in our skin and diminishes with age, this leads to fine lines, wrinkles and a skin that doesn't glow anymore.  This also leads to transepidermal water loss meaning your skin is losing moisture to the environment easily

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer can occur at any age and to anyone.

Having black or brown skin doesn't exclude you from getting skin cancer, remember we have areas of our skin that have little melanin like the palms of our hands & the soles of our feet.

Don't wait to find out if you can get it, rather just prevent it totally
