Understanding Dark Spots

Dark pots are caused by melanocytes producing too much melanin, melanin is the thing that gives us our skin colour.  Different things cause the melanocytes to become overactive but the biggest culprits are the sun and inflammation.

When the sun touches our skin, the heat stimulates the melanocytes to produce more melanin, this happens as the skin is trying to protect itself from sun damage.  Being in the sun without sun protection causes this process to happen over and over again, leading to pigmentation.

Inflammation, also leads to dark spots.  The inflammation is typically caused by acne or picking at your skin or traumatizing your skin.  The heat from the inflammation causes the same reaction as the sun as your skin cannot tell if the heat is coming from the sun or trauma, so melanocytes are activated again to produce more melanin.

Hormonal changes can also cause dark spots, hormones can stimulate the production of melanin.  These hormonal changes could be caused by your monthly cycle, pregnancy or menopause.

While cleansers are mainly tasked with removing dirt and impurities, some formulations can go beyond that, targeting dark spots and promoting an even skin tone.

Which Cleanser Is Best For Dark Spots? Ingredients to Look For:

  1. Vitamin C Infusions:
    • Vitamin C is brightening as it helps inhibit melanin production and promotes a more radiant complexion.
  2. Gentle Exfoliants:
    • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) & beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) help by increasing skin cell turnover by exfoliating the skin.  This helps the skin in shedding any skin cells with excess pigment in them, reducing the appearance of dark spots.
  3. Licorice Extract for Soothing:
    • Licorice has skin-soothing properties which can help calm inflammation associated with dark spots.

Choosing the Right Cleanser:

When choosing a cleanser, choose according to your specific skin type—whether oily, dry, combination, or sensitive.  Avoid cleansers that are drying or stripping to the skin as this might cause inflammation which can lead to more dark spots.

Be consistent with daily cleansing as this allows your serums and moisturisers to penetrate effectively.  Cleansers will not completely remove dark spots on their own as they're on your skin for a short period of time so it's important to pair them with other dark spot treatments, such as serums and moisturisers in your skincare routine.  This will give you optimal results

When cleansing your skin, it's important to wash your face for at least one minute before rinsing the cleanser off.  This will give the surfactants enough time to clean your skin

In conclusion, your journey to a radiant and even skin tone starts with the right cleanser. By including products with beneficial ingredients, tailored to your skin type and needs, you can effectively target and fade dark spots.
